Bishop Henry L. Barnwell Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee will award scholarships to students attending an accredited higher learning institution in financial need. Eligible students must show how they promoted the principles of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through their participation in school, community, and/or faith-based events within the last year.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • U.S. citizen or legal resident (including DACA students).
  • Arizona resident for tuition purposes.
  • Explanation of activities/events in the required supplemental essay section.
  • Graduating high school senior or undergraduate student currently attending an accredited community college or university.
  • Minimum 2.5 GPA.
  • Part- or full-time enrollment.
  • At least one of the references you use in your general application must be from one of the following sources:
    1) High School Representative (ex: teacher, counselor, staff involved with any extracurricular activities you are involved in).
    2) College or University Representative
    3) Faith-based Representative
  • Financial need as demonstrated by the FAFSA.
  • Extra consideration will be given to applicants who have participated in Martin Luther King activities throughout the Valley and state.

Award Details:

  • Awards will be up to $750 for community college and $1,000 for university students.
  • Scholarship is one-time, non-renewable.
  • Scholarship will be sent in two payments, half for each semester.

  1. Describe your participation in any school, community, or faith-based events/activities throughout the past year that promote the principles of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Please explain your involvement and how the event/activity exemplifies his principles.

    Extra consideration is given to applicants who have participated in public Martin Luther King, Jr. activities throughout the Valley and state.
  2. List any honors, special recognition, or awards you would like the committee to consider during their evaluation.
  3. At least one of the references you use in your general application must be from one of the following sources:
    1) High School Representative
    2) College or University Representative
    3) Faith-based Representative
